Meerjungfrauen

Liebe Familie und Freunde,

auf jeden Tauchtrip folgt ein Fest, so wird es jedenfalls beim NTU Tauch Club gehandhabt. Natürlich durfte ich nicht fehlen, sondern habe mich munter unters Volk gemischt. Nach dem BBQ bei dem ich einmal mehr feststellen muss wie selten Asiaten wohl selber kochen, sind wir in eine der drei Inselbars eingekehrt. Im Verlaufe des Abends freute ich mich dann um so mehr, dass wir dank der schlechten Sichtverhältnisse offensichtlich in der Lage waren zwei hübsche Meerjungfrauen aus dem Reich Neptuns zu entführen. Melissa links hatte ein großes "Photographiertwerden-Bedürfnis", Jessie zur rechten dagegen schon einen leichten Sonnenbrand auf den Wangen. Die Gesellschaft am Abend hat mich jedenfalls angemessen für den Mangel an Gesellschaft unter Wasser entschädigen können.

Ich hoffe Ihr befindet Euch auch alle in bester Gesellschaft!

Feeding the fish and the Mat

Dear Readers,

after lunch and some minutes of rest on the way out to the next divesite we found the marine park, where the fishes are supposed to eat out of your hands. As you might guess, not all the bread made it to the fish, because diving makes hungry. Yet, when we were indeed feeding the fish underwater they came close enough for us to touch them. Subsequently the visibility under water was so bad, that sadly we only saw 2 out of 9 wrecks, where the fish prefer to play hide and seek. So we were seeking and seeing nothing, they were hiding and laughing at us (I suppose, since I did not see them). At least I surfaced some shells and cleand up some trash. Summing up, that afternoon the surface was more interesting than the underwater world. Not all diving experiences can be marvelous and wonderful, but tomorrow you see how I was compensated later on that evening.

Liebe Familie und Freunde,

am zweiten Tag meines Tauchabenteuers hatte sich die Gruppe schon ein wenig gefunden. Umringt von Asiaten habe ich meine Mahlzeiten im Jugendherbergsstil eingenommen, wobei der Fisch besonders gut war. Der halbnackt Hempfling an unserem Mittagstisch war unser Tauchlehrer Richard. Das Gruppenbild auf der rechten Seite untergliedert sich in die friedlichen Menschen aus der zweiten Reihe und die "Unsinn-Garanten" aus der ersten Reihe. Mit (v.l.n.r.) Pricylla, Jeremy und Gary habe ich viel Spass gehabt. Jeremy war mein Tauch-Kollege auf den ich mich immer verlassen konnte, auch wenn unser Tauchlehrer Richard der Meinung war, wir hätten uns viel zu oft gegenseitig verlassen, sprich mehr als 3 m Abstand gehabt...

Lasst es euch gut gehen, haltet nur so viel Abstand wie nötig!

Going in, everything okay

Dear Readers and friends around the world,

I hope all of you had a nice weekend and something to smile about besides my blog. After reaching Malaysia on my blog yesterday, the first morning after a disappointing breakfast took us out into the wide open sea, where we needed to practice some more diving drills. One of the first and most basic ones, is the "okay" sign. After entering the water, check that your regulator supplies you with enough good air, put a free hand on your had to form a something like in the right picture and signal, everything "okay".

Guten Tag meine Damen und Herren,

die Regierung von #05-12, einem kleinen Territorialstaat in Süd-Ost Asien hat soeben eine Pressemitteilung erlassen in der von einer schrecklichen Monsun-Tornado-Hurricane-Springflut berichtet wird.
Erste Eindrücke von Indischen Helfern vor Ort beschreiben überwältigende Flutmassen mit hohem Feuchtfuss-Risiko. Die Authorität des Zimmerstaates hat soweit keine Toten gemeldet. Die Regierung hat zwar den Ausnahmezustand ausgerufen, hat die Lage aber nach eigenen Angaben völlig, komplett und sowieso unter Kontrolle. a horrible monsoon-turnado-hurricane-spring-flood has hit the little remote sovereign of #05-12 in South East Asia. First reports by Indian emergency helpers on site included severe flooding combined with ultimate risk of inundation. Authorities report no death so far. The sovereign has established emergency status already and is taking care of the situation, claiming it is under control. Two wet feet were furiously protesting in front of the capital's palace but were quickly calmed down by the sovereigns immediate address to the inhabitants of #05-12.

Reaching Malaysia

Dear Friends and Family,

after a much too long period of a two months and two days I finally managed to leave the little island called Singapore, heading towards an even smaller island, Tioman in Malaysia. Singing up with the NTU dive club was a great idea, facilitating my adventurous diving ambitions greatly. After transferring with ease across the borders, flagging my passport and immigration card twice, we were soon (after only 3 hours of delay) to board the ferry eastwards. The left picture shows the first impression of the little diving paradise, the second picture gives a favourable idea of the local beaches we enjoyed.

Bear with me as the next posts will reveal more natural beauty...

confined water dive

Liebe Leser,

unseren Swimmingpool genauer kennenzulernen hatte ich mir bei weitem nicht so ausdauernd vorgestellt. Um 8:30 Uhr morgens haben wir uns getroffen, um 9:30 waren dann sogar schon die Tauchlehrer da und um 11:30 waren wir nach zwei weiteren Theoriestunden endlich in voller Montur. War gar nicht so leicht, in all diese engen Klamotten reinzuschlüpfen, aber wo ein Tauchgang in Malaysia bevorsteht, drückt man schon mal ein Auge und eine quitschende Hüfte zusammen...
Nach langem üben der einzelnen "Drills", konnte dann sogar der letzte uniforme Unterwasserasiat (die sehen ja über Wasser schon alle so gleich aus...) seine Taucherbrille unter Wasser säubern und von Wasser im Innenraum befreien. Nachdem wichtige Überlebenstrainings auch abgeschlossen waren, zeigte die große Uhr am Pool schon 17:30, ihr könnt euch vorstellen, wie schrumplig ich war, nachdem die einzige Minipause kaum 4 min gedauert hat, von Mittagessen oder Kaffee ganz zu schweigen.
Mittlerweile bin ich aber wohlbehalten aus Malaysia zurück und weiß daher, dass die Zeit gut investiert war. Schon bald werded ihr das auch wissen...

Singapore Symphony Orchestra

Liebe Leser,

es hat viel zu lange gedauert, bis ich endlich das lokale Symphonieorchester life miterleben
durfte. Vergangenen Sonntag hat meine gute Freundin Ming (dankenswerterweise eine gut informierte Einheimische) John und mich zum Kulturabend eingeladen. Ob die leicht verwackelten Bilder von den musiklischen Schwingungen herrühren vermag ich nicht zu erörtern, jedoch waren diese von guter Qualität, trotz des imperfekten Umfelds... open air, open rain, knabbernde Japaner vor uns, stillende Malayin rechts und Luftballon-schwertkämpfende Sechsjährige hinter uns...
Geklatscht wurde auch konsequenterweise nach jedem Stück, aber die Musikwar ja auch gut! :-)
Faust, Harry Potter und ungerische Märsche erinnerten uns an das gute, alte und junge Europa.
Verwöhnt euer Ohren auch mal wieder,

I hope you are all doing well and find time to exercise regularly. My diving class has it, that I spend quite some time in the water lately, look what happened to my upper body's muscles.
I wish I could account for any positive effects on my academic performance as well, but the long term studies are still in progress. Maybe one day there will be scientific proof of my theory.

as promised in the last post you shall not wait too long before the main attraction of the festival is shared with you. A group of Chinese ladies danced for a time that was much too short on a stage that was much too far away. But after I finished my ice-cream I took a closer look at the other culture.

Das Chinesische Mid-Autumn-Fest fand vor kurzem auf unserem Campus statt. Auch moon-cake festival genannt war der gesamte Park der Universität voller Leute, Laternen und Lachen. In schwülwarmer Abendluft konnte man anstehen für selbstgemachte Mooncakes, um seine eigene Laterne zu basteln, oder auch um ein simples Eis zu kaufen. Unterhalten wurden wir an diesem Abend von Kräcker und Früchte-Wettessen, Theaterstücken, Tanz und Gesang.
Mit den jungen Gästen des Abends habe ich mich fast genauso gerne fotographieren lassen, wie mit den Tänzerinnen, die morgen auf Euch warten...

correcting entry - Mat is studying business

Dear Reader,

what a nice language accounting is... loads of ways to describe in flowery and spicy ways how a the peaceful life of any student can quickly be made harder than it needs to be. My message is: Workload kicks in after the midterms, because finals are approaching quicker than ever. It will eventually be time to get familiar with the study notes, as most test will be open book. In my opinion that usually makes tests even harder, at least for a person with a memory like mine. After having had the first lecture with the new accounting professor for the second half of term one, all of us are warned that the time when we used to be able to write emails in class will soon be over...

Mat is studying.... diving theory

Dear Reader,

to fight a current misconception of how I spend my time, it is not only sleeping, eating and partying, it is also sunbathing, lying next to the pool and meeting wonderful people on sandy beaches....

Enough of dreaming in prose, life is nice over here, no question, but still without having had at least a look into my dive theory book and doing some examples with the recreational dive planner, I would not have been able to pass the test last Tuesday.


Since I did, the show can go on. Saturday we meet for our first series of confined water dives, learning the basics about underwater navigation and survival in our universities swimming pool. Most of you should remember this most unknown and horribly hostile area for me from earlier posts.

Let's see whether the theory keeps anybody floating that day....

Not only was I remembered how little the average person on the average Asian street knows about his or her immediate surroundings when you ask for directions, but much more did I understand that no matter where you are, you have friends to the North, East, South and West!

Suppe in Klößchen

Liebe Freunde und Familie,

in Singapur gibt es viele Köstlichkeiten, das ist vermutlich für den fleissigen Leser nichts Neues.
Als ich jedoch eines Abends in einen schönen Restaurant von einer freundlichen Singapurianerin daraufhingewiesen wurde, dass man diese kleinen Klößchen ganz vorsichtig mit den Stäbchen in die Essig-Ingwer-Sauce tunken solle, habe ich zunächst nicht richtig verstanden. Sie erklärte mit halbvollem Mund und leicht schlürfenden Nebengeräuschen, dass ich sonst die Suppe in dem Klösschen verlieren würden, wenn ich es nicht vorsichtig behandle. Gesagt, getan, schon war ich am schlürfen und hätte mir um 3° fast die Zunge verbrüht, aber es war sehr lecker. Also, wenn Euch das nächste Mal jemand Klösschen in der Suppe anbietet, bittet doch um das Gegenteil, es lohnt sich!

living under a bridge

Liebe Leser,

wer glaubt das Leben sei nur Sonnenschein hier in Singapur, der hat nur begrenzt recht. Mitunter wird man von Regenschauern überrascht, die jedem Mitteleuropäer wie riesige Unwetter vorkommen müssen und vor deren Regenmassen garantiert in der Tagesschau gewarnt würde. Hier allerdings, gehört das zum Alltag. Man wird eben schon mal naß, bis auf die Knochen. Aus der Not eine Tugend gemacht haben Philip, Philipp und ich das Leben unter der Brücke entdeckt. In Singapur gibt es jedoch keine Obdachlosen, denn der Staat stellt jedem eine Wohnung zur Verfügung. Der Sticker vom Musuem noch auf der Brust, lagen wir an der schrägen Brückeninnenwand und haben dem Regenschauer zugesehen. Als wir wieder trocken waren haben wir den nächsten Anlauf genommen um auf den letzen Meter bis zur U-Bahnstation erneut völlig durchnässt zu werden. Was lernen wir daraus? 3 EUR für einen Schirm scheint ein fairer Preis...

Family Piety - one sign says all

Dear Reader,

this picture resembles the feeling of my fellow classmates and me who are literally from every continent of the world, but still know where they belong deep down in their heart. Even though at first sight it appears at odds with today's ubiquitous travel opportunities, only slightly challenged by increasing fuel prices, the gist of the message is to let your loved ones know how and where you spend your time, at least every once in a while. A blog provides quite a nice forum for that... so I cope!

Asian Civilisations Museum

Dear Family and Friends,

those of you who know me well are aware of my affinity to the fine arts and history of different cultures in our wider surroundings. Thus, Philipp, Philip and I spend an afternoon together in the Asian Civilation Museum, supposedly one of the best ones in Singapore. Already at the entrance I started to like the place, because I was given the chance to earn a free entry ticket by guessing the one college that has gratis tickets in our university by flashing my student ID...
The "School of Art, Design and Media" is the closest to where I stay on campus, but I did not guess quite right, but instead behaved like an honest and obedient business student
*cough, cough*





















Our time in the museum was not only educational, it was also fun, as the traditional costumes in the kid's corner might slightly hint at. If I am not highly mistaken, Philip Geiser was dressed as an ancient Chinese king (or queen?), whereas Philipp Maier and me were wearing the soldiers uniforms, including such nifty accessoires as the flag, shoes and hat.
After we got done trading tea for gold and spices, we left the place with lots of good memories about how to make silk, that Salat is not only a German dish, but rather a muslim prayer and how the famous Chinese porcellain is (or rather was) produced. We learnt how the region looked a few hundred years ago, who reigned it when and how. Yet, the most memorable moments I captured for you, dear reader in the above pictures. May you share my enthusiams about making each day a reason to smile!

Die drei Poser

Liebe Leser,

Sir Stamford Raffles wäre stolz auf die Halbsöhne und Gastsöhne seiner Stadt, die so gesund und muter unter seiner Statue am Boat Quai posieren. Ich persönlich habe mich über den Besuch meiner Freunde Philip Geiser und Philipp Maier aber noch viel mehr gefreut. An jenem lauschen Mittwoch Nachmittag waren wir zunächst im Cafe nebenan einen leckeren Drink heben und anschliessend im Museum. Dort haben wir neben vielen anderen Sachen auch in der Kleiderkiste gewühlt... man darf sich auf den Post von morgen freuen...

Christian auf Sentosa

Liebe Leser,

So schön kann das Leben sein... wenn man in Sentosa am Strand in einer halboffenen Cabana (kleine Hütte) sitzt und den Schiffen im nahegelegenen Hafen nachschaut, dann kann es in der heutigen Welt doch glatt schon mal passieren, dass man visuell über einen seiner besten Freunde stolpert, der gerade mit den Füßen im Sand meine Handynummer wählt. So traf ich Christian auf Sentosa.

Sentosa Island

Dear Reader,

Singapore has a little "paradise" in front of its shore, called Sentosa Island. It used to be difficult to access, but since a bus, a cable-gondola-lift and a mini-train connect it to the main island this issue belongs to the past.
Thanks to my friend Mayra and her organization skills were we able to enjoy a whole afternoon "on vacation" on the beach. Taking a swim, playing some volleyball, throwing the frizbee and taking a drink at the poolbar all added to feeling of relaxation and holiday.





Since we have midterm exams coming up at the end of the week, this was the last time for a while that we would go out.

There are more pictures to come on the evening we spend there.

Ich mache ernst

Liebe Leser,

in Vorbereitung auf meinen Tauchkurs vom 19. bis 22. September in den 24°C warmen Gewässern einer kleinen Malayischen Inselgruppe, musste ich durch die halbe Stadt fahren um meine Ausrüstung anzuprobieren.

Nachdem ich einmal tief ausgeatmet hatte war klar...
ich bin selbst in Asien nur Größe "S".

Dinner mit Lisa

Liebe Leser,

mit großer Freude teile ich euch mit, dass mich mittlerweile zwei liebe Menschen aus Deutschland besucht haben. Lisa war letzte Woche zu Gast und Christian kam übers Wochenende aus Kuala Lumpur vorbei. Die Welt ist klein, aber fein! Ich habe mich riesig gefreut!

Das zweite Bild zeigt unter anderem so schmackhafte Köstlichkeiten wie "drunken chicken", Suppe in Klößen, statt Klöße in Suppe, Erdnussbutternudeln und Krabbenpfannkuchen... hmmm lecker, lecker...

"The clinic"

Dear Readers,

haevily hit by the female abuse of making us men do the dishes (see yesterdays post), we seaked rescue and shelter in a local bar called "the clinic". They did not necessarily serve the very best medicine (see green bag of 10 vodka shots in form of an infusion), but we still got out pretty much okay.
