Liebe Leser und Geniesser,

möge mein Eintrag euch wohlauf erreichen. Ich gebe mir Mühe etwas aktueller zu werden, aber ich laufe doch der Zeit immer etwas hinterher. So auch dieses Mal, wenn ich mit euch einen Kuchen teile, den ich in Kanada zur Freude meiner Freunde und Mitbewohner kreiert habe. Vielleicht nicht der größte Augenschmaus, aber durchaus geniessbar :-)

NY City Library

Dear friends and family,

if you have the chance to visit NY, please stop by the library and enjoy this old and lovingly restored building with its great marble floor halls and immense wooden desks. You might not expect a library to hold so many cultural treasures, but the NY library is almost a museum in itself. Walk in - it is open until late and best of all, it is warm and free :-)

Rockefeller Center

Hallo liebe Leser,

ich hoffe mein Schreibpause hat euch nicht abgehalten ab und an in meinen Blog zu schauen. In Kanada schreibe ich derzeit an einem Aufsatz zum Thema Philanthropie und Spenden-Verhalten von Unternehmern. Klar, dass mich dann das Rockefeller Center in NY auch aus beruflicher Perspektive reizte, war doch Rockefeller einer der ersten und prominentesten Philanthropisten Nordamerikas. Zwar wäre ich auch dem Leben als Ölmagnat nicht direkt abgeneigt, aber nicht alles was so im Golf von Mexiko vor sich hin sprudelt, ist unbedingt gut. Ich konzentriere mich daher aufs publizieren (von Blogeinträgen).

New York Times Square

Dear family and friends,

there is no business like show business. Who thinks Broadway and Time Square are dead after the victory of DVD and its little sister blue ray, is mistaken. Time Square is bustling with life, people, hot dog sellers and the most luminous bill boards. The shows on display in the many theaters around the central plaza exceed every expectation of one big stage. I wish Susan and I could have seen the Lion King, but family matters saw me come home to Germany for a more important occcasion.

Next time I am in NY, I shall sing my favorite songs...

Empire State building

Liebe Freunde,

das Empire State Building ist mit 102 Stockwerken das Wahrzeichen New Yorks und regiert mit knapp 444m (Antennenspitze) über der 5th Avenue. 1972 hat es gut 50 Mio USD gekostet. Knapp 40 Jahre später kostest die Renovierung und ökologische Aufrüstung gut 500 USD (the economist).

Zwar waren wir nicht oben, aber schon von unten sah es ganz imposant aus.

New York Central Park

Dear friends,

a visit to NY is hardly complete without a walk through Central Park. It was a little too cold to walk without having a pit stop recharging our batteries with a hot chocolate / latte macchiato in one of the many little cafes.

Enjoy your pit stop every once in a while as well,

MoMA - The Museum of Modern Arts

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

once again I dearly hope that my lines may find you smiling. During our visit to the MoMA in New York, I learned an important lessen for life. Art is not supposed to be pretty, even though that is what we mostly associate it with. Art is supposed to affect our emotions through our senses. We perceive this deliberate play might not always as pleasant, but the pictures I share with you might find a widely approving audience. If not, VanGaugh, Monet, et al, would hardly be still memorized. We judge so much by beauty, is'nt that ugly?

Beautifully artistically, I shall say: *GoOdByE*

New York

Dear readers,

thanks for staying interested in my few scribblings every now and then. The Winter break from my PhD studies brought me to New York City. Truly a nice place to be: full of life, full of art and entertainment, fine dining and some joyful friends, this was a delight after the first months of studying. Coming back after 10 years had also its interesting aspects. Many things I memorized bigger, most distances longer and the menu prices quite a bit cheaper. But this did not impact our fun-level too much. In the next posts I will share how we spent our time in the "Big Apple".

Niagara River

Dear family and friends,

I am happy to share with you sunny pictures from the winter walk Susan and I enjoyed alongside the Niagara River, just before it dips down a few hundred feet. Some of the branches of the mighty river did not foreshadow big falls, others did. We two especially liked the three sisters' islands where you find Susan standing below a tree arch.

Liebe Freunde,

ich hoffe es geht euch allen wunderbar. Ich teile heute noch genau so gerne wie vor ein paar Wochen mit euch die schönen Eindrücke der winterlichen Niagara Fälle. Zwar war es etwas kälter, aber wir haben trotzdem den ganzen Park angesehen. Die Kanadische Seite ist deutlich touristischer und bietet den schöneren Ausblick auf die Wasserfälle. Die US Seite ist dafür fast komplett naturgetreu beibehalten. Das fanden wir schöner zum Winterspaziergang.
