Wonderful birthday present

Dear Readers,

I hope all of you are doing well and also have the chance to at least once experience how much it means when your special person visits you on your special day. When I was planning my birthday with my colleagues and friends in Shanghai, I did not think it possible that I would enjoy Susan's company that day. Taking me completely by surprise that was my most wonderful birthday present!

Tee und Musik zur Nachmittagsstunde im Century Park

Liebe Familie und Freunde,

ich hoffe euch allen geht es sehr gut und ihr habt weiterhin Freude an meinen Blogeinträgen.
Am ersten Wochenende in Shanghai bin ich mit meinem Arbeitskollegen Ratish im Century Park gewesen. Als Ort der 175 Jahr Feier unseres Arbeitgebers Sulzer, haben wir gedacht, schauen wir uns den Schauplatz schon mal vor dem Spektakel an. Schöne Heckenformationen haben den grau tristen Sonntag etwas aufhellen können.
Wann wart ihr das letzte Mal in der Natur spazieren?

My Shanghai Hotel room

Liebe Leser,

nach ein paar hotelinternen Umzügen in meinem ersten Hotel war ein Wechsel ins Holiday Inn Express ein willkommener Ersatz. Da die Firmen-Wohnung derzeit noch bewohnt ist, bleibe ich bis Ende Mai wohl noch hier. Das Frühstücksbuffet ist zwar zum davonlaufen, aber der Rest ist absolut okay.

Die Couch ist übrigens eine Schlafcouch, nur so nebenbei bemerkt...

Warming up with Badminton

Dear fellow sports(wo)men,

I hope all of you had an energetic day and full of nice activities. One of the first things to do in Shanghai was KTV (Karaokee singing). Sadly I do not have any pictures from that night. But I did bring a fresh batery to the badminton match on the following day. Trained with the Anton brothers, Solingen's local Badminton future, I enjoyed a fun afternoon with my friends from Shanghai.
I thought the pink raket did not precisely suit me, but I was convinced it matched with my sports jersey. Any comments? Please keep it to yourself :-)

Kickoff in Shanghai

Liebe Freunde,

ein Abenteuer reiht sich ans nächste. So berichte ich euch heute aus der chinesischen Wirtschaftsmetropole Shanghai. Philipp hat sie anders bezeichnet, aber das ist nicht jugendfrei und schon gar nicht im Einklang mit chinesischer Internetzensur. Daher heute schon mal die ersten Eindrücke von dem Lichtermeer am frühen Abend.
Dank meiner Arbeitskollegen Echo (links) und Jenny (mitte) habe ich direkt eine schöne Stadtführung geniessen können.

Mal schauen, was die Stadt sonst noch so bereit hält.

Stopover in Switzerland

Dear friends in Switzerland,

many thanks for providing an environment to which returning is a pleasure every time. Thanks to my great friend Silke, I was able to enjoy real Swiss cheese fondue and thanks to Katrin I quickly was brought up to date with the news generated by my alma mater. The local newspapers were still covering a rather disappointing story of reduced freedom of speach at our institution. Yet, unwinding in the sun of Silke's roof top terrasse with a home made desert was the right medicine against universitarean stress.

Ostern daheim - so solls sein

Meine lieben Freunde und Familie,

nach langer Reise durch die fernen Länder Südostasiens war das Nachhausekommen um so schöner. Besonders die Osterfeiertage im Kreise meiner Familie habe ich sehr genossen. Nicht nur hatte der Frühling gerade seine schönsten Kleider angelegt, auch die Freude meiner Familie und Freunde daheim waren das schönste Ostergeschenk, was ich mir vorstellen konnte.

Another goodbye to Singapore

Saying goodbye is never easy... but I have to go...

Having been around great (old) friends made my last days in Singapore arguably much more enjoyable and I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to all the important people that have enriched my life during my stay. Seeing familiar faces like Andi and Vicky again ensures me of long-lasting friendships being possible even over great distances. It makes me think with pleasures about the future encounters when we meet each other wherever it may be.
You all mean a lot to me!

Dear friends and family,

coming back to normal life is not easy after eating fresh seafood right of the hook, diving wrecks and seeing turtles. Yet, all good things have to come to an end, so I share the last impressions of Coron with you.

Was I really deep down and in there?

Liebe Familie und Freunde,

mit dem Wunsch die japanischen Kriegsschiffe auf dem Meeresboden der Bucht von Coron zu sehen, war ich auf die Philippinen geflogen. Darum habe ich mir also auch gleich sechs der alten Eisenhaufen angeschaut, vier auch von innen.
Zwar waren die beiden Kriegs-/Frachtschiffe Olympia Maru und Tangat geräumig gegenüber den Zerstörern, aber dennoch habe ich mir mehr als einmal den Kopf und die Ellbogen gestoßen.
Dafür durfte ich aber auch auf dem Boot den Comfort Room besuchen nachdem ich vorher das Mittagessen beim Garen beaufsichtigt hatte.
Wir sollten mehr frischen Fisch essen, so ein Tunfisch aus der Dose ist ein schlechter Ersatz.

Lonely beach hut

Dear readers,

I almost forgot to post the pictures of the little sandy retreat we found on our island hopping tour. Reachable only by boat, this little privately owned island had it visiting price carved into the dark stone cliffs. Together with our German friends we stayed for quite some time, snorkelling the riff in front of the island until our sunburn reminded us to better stop.

Lake Barracuda

Liebe Freunde,

Warum sind wir auf die Philippinen gereist? Richtig, weil wir noch nie dort waren. Auch richtig, wegen des guten Essens. Bestimmt auch wegen der netten Leute, aber ganz sicher wegen der schönen Natur. Deshalb hier ein paar Eindrücke der Umgebung von Coron, als wir uns auf dem Weg zum Baracuda See auf einem kleinen Bootchen von den Wellen schaukeln liessen.

Playing, singing, drumming until 3 am

Dear friends and family,

I hope you all recently had the chance to play some music and enjoy a good time with your friends. When Vicky and me walked back from dinner to our hostel, we met those wonderful and happy Philippinos on the street in front of an art shop. After a short chat it was clear how we would spend the evening. Our Tagalog was not so impressive, but when the group of teachers played some English songs in our honor, we gave our best to sing out loud.

Show me the lyrics, give me the tones and then I scare you away!

Coron

Dear Readers,

I hope all of you are doing very well. The last session of pictures from the Philippines starts with impressions from Coron. Once a fishing village, tourism and the sunken WWII shipwrecks have turned the little peaceful place around and it is awaiting an ever more prosperous future.
The picture shows the little Japanese Hostel Vicky and I stayed at. From our veranda it was only a short walk to the jetty. Sadly swimming in the waters was not advised, due to pollution.

Philippino Food

Geschätzte Leser,

die philippinische Küche ist so vielfältig wie die sie beheimatende Inselwelt. An diesem Abend haben wir alle unsere ungarnierten Reistürmchen mit Fleisch und Gemüse besonders genossen. Wir hatten in den Tagen zuvor durchaus gemischte Erlebnisse und haben nach dem "Trial and Error" Prinzip unsere eigenen Erfahrungen gemacht.

Los Banos

Dear Readers,

on the way back from Lake Taal to Manila we suddenly realized that we still had one day left, before we needed to go back to Manila. That is what happens when you are vacationing too much :-) So we got on the next bus down South again, reaching the little town "Los Banos". Not only the Spanish speaking amongst you would rightly guess that this town was renown for its hot springs. Therefor accomodation with pools was not scarce and we quickly settled for the top left picture. The kids in the lagoon behind the hotel also seemed to enjoy themselves, swimming in the muddy waters with their sandels in their hands.
Our little walk around town had us exploring an inoperative rail track and an interesting advertisement.
