jumping crocodiles

Dear friends,

taking a little detour off the Anahem Hwy into Kakadu national park the jumping crocodile tour was highly recommended to the day before while swimming in the Florence Falls' pools with two young Canadian and Australian physicians who had done it themselves.
Beating our rental car up on the dusty unsealed gravel, we woke up some birds. At the place itself, we started with Snake and Coffee, like the last post shows.
But on the boat the real experience started: Barely 15 m away from the jetty "big papa croc" was lazyly dozing away in the murky waters. He knew the boat and my first suspicion of him being tied to some tree nearby proofed false, when he was the first to jump out at the bait. His big jaw is on the top left. Sadly my skills in motion picture taking were not as developed to bring you the 6m crock half way out of the water, but the second picture on top is still impressive I believe. The last reptile is missing one of his front arms. "That's what they do to each other" the captain explained upon me sharing this photo with him. "Imaging what they can do to you. And still, there are people out there swimming!" The trick to survive, because you and me would probably die due to the heavy blod loss, is to shut the blood flow to the extremity in danger directly. As the crocodile has had roughly 200 million years (hmmm that even sounds to much for my likings, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocodile has just confirmed it) to adapt, I guess we have to give it some credit for a job well done.

Hope to be able to say the same about my cooking that I am about to start,

Cheers,

Mat

part time job: snake dompteur

Dear friends very near, near and far,

I wish my blog might still entertain and inform you a little bit. On the second day in the Northern Territory we went to a crocodile tour. Right before they started the actual tour they asked for volunteers to help them hold their heavy snakes. So this beautifully dry and clean Olive Python clang to my neck and I had to play tree, extending my hands. Sudden movements are strictly discouraged as they might provoke undesirable reactions by the python, who kills her prey by strangling... all this I learned with the 10 kg around my slender neck...
Asking when the beauty was fed last time, they told me... "Yunno mate, some(s)ing like 160 days for sure!" Only because the little long friend gave me a constant hug, did I stay for a little bit longer. In the end, I was not really sure whether her warm embrace was really the affection that I caused...

Get a human hug today!

Hugs,

Mat

Guten Appetit,

Euer Matti

taking a dip in Florence Falls

Dear Reader,

Litchfield National Park features numerous waterfalls which cascade from a sandstone plateau called the Tabletop Range. One of them is the Florence falls where swimming is encouraged. My frist attempt to swim against the heavy current to reach the safe spot between the two falls proofed successful. Climbing the little rocks with my bare hands and feet clearly less so. I should have taken lessons from Andi and Julien. Afterwards I could not reach the same spot anymore, so sad, because there are no pics to proof it. Next time I try to capture the adventure for YOU.

Cheers,

Mat

first refreshment: Wangi Falls

Euer Matti

my first couchsurfing experience

Dear Readers, dear Scottie, Jenna and Will,

I hope my lines find you well. First of all, thanks Scottie, Jenna and Will for letting me bunk in with you. I hope I can enhance my video-gaming skills quite a lot before I leave :-) After a warm welcome Scottie gave me a tour of the house. Will even cleared his room for me, so my first couch is actually a real wonderful bed!
Let's hope for more positive couchsurfing experiences.

Thanks so much!

Cheers,

Mat

attempt on timely report

Dear friends and family,

I hope you are all doing wonderful. Although many pictures of Cambodia and Vietnam have not been uploaded yet, I opted for the most recent updates from Australia to be shared instead. Once Singapore has me back, I will dutifully publish the remaining highlights of those trips.

I hope you agree. If you do not, too bad :-)

best regards,

Mat

most friendly immigration officers at Darwin Airport

Dear Readers,

having reached the NT yesterday early morning, I have been amazed by the friendliness of the local immigration AND custom officers. They even let me import some treats for my friends in Australia.

Hitting the road after sunrise, my friend Rabani and me went to the Litchfield National Park. Endless empty roads were as new to her New Dehli driving style as to my European stop and go.

Hope to have a chance to post some more soon,

cheers,

Matti

Prüfungen vorbei, wars das jetzt? Nein, aber DANKE!

Liebe Leser, liebe Mama, lieber Papa,

My grandfather in Parliament

Dear Readers,

one of the most heartracing stories during our ancient culture tour occured inside the walls of the biggest religious monument on earth.
We were not allowed to enter the main tower...
BUt having read the sign that forbid us to climb up the stairs to the top, a guard with a slimy smile on his face approached us and offered "private admission" to the top for the "extra cheap price of USD 20 per person.
Now we were in a little desaster. Having paid USD 40 for each 3-day ticket was expensive enough (albeit worthwhile the money) and we certainly did not want to engage in any bribery scandal on site. Yet, on the other hand, travelling all the way to Angkor Wat and then not seeing the tpo of the central tower is like marrying without kissing the bride.
We were unhappy for some moments to say the least.
But then I remembered that my grandfather in Parliament is on the cultural restauration and reservation board of the German development aid program. How could I forget... So I told the greedy guide that I was going upstairs without paying him in order to check wether the German taxpayer's money was worthwhile invested. I asked him, with shaking knees, whether he wanted to be responsible for a stop of funding for the project once the renewal vote was due next week in Parliament. Even though he did not necessarily looked convinced, I jumped the fence and climbed up the steep stairs in an attempt not to appear to nervous. Instead I was shaking so badly that I had to hold on to the stones and take a break of 2 seconds in the middle of the stairs. Reaching the top I saw that a policemen was on my heals...

More tomorrow...

Cheers,

Matti

Spirituell gestärkt konnten wir also nun Angkor beklettern.

Kommt ruhig mit!

Visiting its Majesty: Angkor Wat

Dear Readers,

on the morning of our second day in Siem Riep we decided that it was time to conquer some real temples. What you have seen until now, might appear strikingly piffling in comparison with the mighty giants of temples we saw that day. At least that is how I felt, taking the first picture of Angkor Wat, showing its reflection in the water of the vast reservoires in front of it. At the entrance we got ourselves a smart little guide who took us through the backdoor depicted on the right. What we had seen before, was mearly the gate...

Stay classy,

Mat

Sunset on Bakheng Mountain

Dear friends and family,

what a touristy experience... walking up a dusty trail with a couple of hundreds of other tourists was really not on our to do list for the temple visits. That this little hill would be so crowded escaped our imagination by quite a bit.
Still, the pictures that Susan, Grace and me took on the summit compensated at least a little bit. I hope you like them.

Have a nice sunset today,

Mat

Elephants crossing

Dear Readers,

I hope my lines find you well and the little party picture intermezzo was appreciated :-)
Continuing with my pictures from Angkor Wat, I share with you the sights we saw alongside the way, on the roads that connect the main temples.
Most interestingly, we came a cross an Elephant Crossing, quite a unique experience for an European.

Have fun,

Mat

rooftap party

Liebe Leser,

Euer Matti

Inside the walls

Dear Readers,

what is there to see inside the walls, you might rightfully ask yourself. I can tell you, the structure by itself is the main attraction, but nevertheless some of the nicest statues were kept well guarded in mostly the central towers of the big temples. They served as worshiping places. I am going to take some time to pray today. What about you?

All the best,

Mat

best preserved scultpures

Dear friends and family,

I hope my lines find you well. Today I share with you some of the best preserved sculptures I have seen in Angkor. I believe they show gods. Even more amazing was how nature started acting as a preserving agent. With trees covering more and more of the old walls, these stand firm for the years to come.

Thank you mother nature!

All the best,

Mat

Virus Attacke

Liebe Computernutzer,

Euer Matti

Musicians at the Lake

Music makes your life much happier!

Dear Readers,

I hope your life is happy even without enlightening tones each day. In order to assure that our lives were also tuned in on the holiday feeling we were enjoying we decided to put the little mouth-drums to use that we had purchased for exorbitant amounts of money just before entering this little water temple.

Let some music make your day too!

Cheers,

Mat

Die alten Wege beschreiten

Liebe Leser,

Matthias
