Fireworks on the 20th floor

Liebe Leser,

zwar ist Singapur's Nationaltag bereits am 09.August gefeiert worden, dass hält aber die freudigen Insulaner nicht davon ab, nochmal ein paar Raketen steigen zu lassen...
Vom 20. Stockwerk eines nahegelegenen Wohnhauses, wo wir auch unser Abendessen gemeinsam genießen konnten, hatten wir einen tollen Ausblick auf die Stadt und das Feuerwerk. Diejenigen von uns die in den kritischen 15 Minuten in der Metro steckten, sein diese Photos besonders empfohlen.

Chinatown

Dear Reader,
lately we had the opportunity to get to know a different side of Singapore. While we were walking through the rain, people were praying in their temples on the side of the road. Whoever was not used to the stinky smell of Durians, had to in order to survive, because it was haunting you down around every corner. Luckily we found a great place that sold BBQ pork soaked in honey and smoked in the pit for a while.... very yummy. I wish you could try!

Dear Readers,

I hope all of you had such a great day as I did. Just a few moments ago I signed up for an adventurous trip to the part of the world that is the least discovered. If Asia is loud, crowded, and hectic, I am going to escape.... After 2003 (Egypt) and 2005 (Thailand) it is time yet again to go to the underwater world. Within 25 days from now I will be a licensed PADI open water diver!

heute haben mich gleich zwei Postsendungen sehr glücklich gemacht. Ich möchte mich herzlich für die kulinarischen Freuden und unbezahlbaren Kunstwerke bedanken die mein Leben in Singapur auf angenehmste Weise versüßen und mit der Heimat verbinden. local delights

Dear Reader,

sorry for the delay in writing. I guess group work, case writing and translations are taking their toll. Still time is very enjoyable over here, despite the fact that the rainy season is knocking heavily at my window.

Before having had dinner at Philip's place the other night, I was prompted to try out some local fruits... since I forgot the names already, I had some help from a local (thanks Wei-Chieh)




"The first one is called a mangosteen. It's nicknamed the Queen of Fruits. Durian <<(not tried yet, not on the pictures either)>>, on the other hand, is nicknamed the King of Fruits (as obnoxious as it goes). The two fruits are usually in season together, so people who eat the heaty durians would very often also eat mangosteens to counter the "heatiness" because the mangosteen has a cooling effect - ok, these are the terms used in chinese medicine, which groups food into various types. Eat too much, and there'll be an imbalance, and you fall sick."

The second one is the Ramputan fruit, a little bit like Lychees. Sweet, quite refreshing, somewhat cooling...


As all of you know, I am a very careful guy.... so I did not fall sick... yet.

Untermieter

Liebe Leser,

Asien ist anders, ist lauter, ist bunter. Das dachte sich vielleicht auch jene kleine Echse, die sich in meine Ecke hexte. Als ich eines Abends nach Hause kam, klebte sie da ganz ruhig an meiner Decke und suchte Unterschlupf. Kaum größer als 2,5 cm konnte ich natürlich nicht nein sagen.
Nachdem sie aber die zweite Nacht in Folge keine Miete zahlen wollte, musste sie gehen... befreundeten Untermietern würde das nicht passieren, ich freue mich auf Besuch!

New Asian Bar, 72nd floor

Dear Readers,

hoping the view out of this bar might be as enjoyable on the pictures as it was in real life, I share my experiences in Singapore's best reknown roof-top bar with you:
After hopping off our taxi in front of the Swisshotel, we found our way through the marbel lobby to the elevator that would take us to the "New Asian Bar".
Walking in we saw the members area unguarded, produced our imginary membership cards and walked directly up to the 73rd floor, where we found our head of carrer services, David Lim greeting us warmly. Knowing that happy hour lasts until 9pm and came with 40% off, we conciously timed our orders. David in the meantime kept ordering the finest bar food I ever tasted, including great Pizza, fried shrimp, toasted vegies and other small mouthwatering appetizers. When the drinks came we were amazed by the size of them...

We asked our birthday boy for this evening, Julien from France to get us started on the Lychee Martiny, what a bowl.
Continuing the night the best part came at last, when we found out that we did not have to pay for anything consumed before 9pm, including all the drinks and food we had enjoyed. I believe it was a mixture of curtesy of NTU, my university's carrer service center and the fact that the management of the place seemed to really appreciate us as their guest.
In either way this made this evening one of the best in terms of value for money!

I personally hope to visit new Asian bar again soon. After they finish their remodeling in September, be sure to drop by once you are in the region.

Raffels' Hotel

Liebe Leser,

auf einer unseren kleinen Erkundungsreisen sind wir am berühmten Raffels' Hotel vorbeigekommen, das wohl namentlich zumindest an den hitorische Ereinisse erinnert:

"1819 gründete Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, Agent der britischen Ostindischen Handelskompanie, am alten Handelssitz Singapur die erste Niederlassung." (www.wikipedia.de)

Wäre schön, wenn der ein oder die andere von Euch mich besuchen kämen und sich hier ein Zimmer suchten. Ich würde das schmuckvolle Gebäude gerne von Innen kennenlernen.

The Shisha Place

Dear friends and family,

after eating out in a fabulous Turkish restaurant my friends and me went for a special evening adventure in Arab street of Singapore. In this grafitty laden, narrow and surprisingly dusty street with the air thick enough to cut it, we were looking for a place to smoke Shisha, or "waterpipe". Once seated in a comfortable sofa outside, we needed to relocate because we would
not be served by the local landlord who argued these seats belonged to an Egyptian lady that lived a couple of cafés down the road.




When we found her, she suggested for us to move upstairs (into what I firmly believe was the family's living room) where she had an airconditioned area. When she on top served us with fair priced drinks and 2 different kinds of Shisha (Cappuccino and Grapes) we were quite pleased as the pictures reveal.

Btw, the first picture shows my friend Ayush from Nepal and the second one my special pal from Perú, mi querida Susan!

Frühstück mit Email und Tagesschau

Liebe Familie und Freunde,

da ihr nun einen guten Einblick in mein Privatleben geniesst, sollt ihr auch wissen, wie ich mit Emails und Tagesschau frühstücke. In Ermangelung einer morgentlich gelieferten Tageszeitung müssen die ARD Nachrichten mich mit dem Weltgeschehen füttern, sonst fällt das Folgen und Beitragen zu etwaigen Diskussionen in der Café-Pause von 11:02-11:09 noch schwerer als es durch die Zeitknappheit ohnehin schon ist.
An jenem Morgen frühstückte ich einen warmen Teigklos, gefüllt mit Gehacktem, Ei und Gemüse. Na ja.... das Omlette aus der Kantine nebenan schmeckt schon wensentlich besser.

Nebenbemerkung

Offiziell bin ich zwar schon im Bett, inoffiziell freue ich mich gerade über die niedrigste Temperatur die bislang in meinem Zimmer gemessen wurde. An Onkel Thomas 50. Geburtstagsfeier schreiben wir hier wunderbare 26,2 ° C. Ob ich wohl jemals eine Decke brauchen werde?

ÖPNV in Singapur

Liebe Leser,

sobald man von unserem Campus im Westen der Insel irgendwo anders hin möchte ist man als Student auf den öffentlichen Personen-Nahverkehr angewiesen. Zugegebenermaßen ist das Verbindungsnetz recht feinmaschig, aber der ganze Luxus der guten Anbindung nutzt wenig, wenn die Reisegeschwindigkeit einem zügigen Joggen gleicht. Zwar fahren die Busfahrer teils schlimmer als Rennfahrer, aber dafür machen die U-Bahnen jeglichen Zeitgewinn garantiert zunichte. Sobald wir in die City wollen, sind wir mindestens 70 min unterwegs.
Leider sieht die U-Bahn station nur sehr früh am morgen oder spät am Abend so aus. Wenn wir gehen ist grundsätzlich Hochbetrieb. Demnächst vielleicht ein Foto wenn was los ist....

going out for dinner

Dear reader,

thanks for staying with me for more than 2 weeks by now, even if I every once in a while send you pictures from the pool when you are working...

Today I would like to share the wonderful experience of going out to eat together and sitting at a round table. I prefer that to the rectangular one, just because everybody is able to fully participate in the interaction and nobody's food is out of reach for me ...

Starting from my left side you may or may not see:
Camilla (France), Dominique (Germany), John (Switzerland), Levent (Turkey), Saurabh (India), xyz in yellow shirt (India), Sona (India), Susan (Perú), Adina (Indonesia), Mayra (Mexico), David (Ireland) and me :-)

That night we reached our destination quite a bit late, as due to the expected crowds on the streets on National day, most direct walkways were closed down for security purpuses and people had to walk on the major highways in the center of the city, taking huge extra laps to reach where they wanted to go.

Nevertheless the food was great, thanks Mayra for the pick, and we all had a great time.

Liebe Familie und Freunde,

auf dem Gelände der Uni gibt es einen Club, dessen Name einen ganz falschen Eindruck vermittelt. Vor kurzem warem wir im "Staff Club" (Bar für Uni-Mitarbeiter) und haben neben zwei äteren Semestern nur so junge und hübsche Menschen getroffen, wie das nebenstehende Bild belegt. Von Links nach rechts seht ihr meine MBA Kollegen: Mayra (Mexico), mich kennt ihr ja, Levent (Türkei), Susan (Peru) und Camilla (Frankreich). Von Staff also weit und breit keine Spur. Damit das so bleibt, werden wir wohl demnächst öfter bei sehr studentenfreundlichen Preisen und Billiards, Darts und Karaokee unseren Feierabend ausklingen lassen.

more news from the pool

Dear folks in Europe,

I know most of you just enjoyed their summer vacation. Addressed to all that just came back from their most favorite time, when I am already back hitting the books, this sole and simple picture was taken from the far corner of the pool. It shows the little shady area with the table that I preferably do my readings on. Not that I would read them, but they accompany me, when I need to take a quick dip.

Dear reader,
as every now and then even amidst the biggest heat wave the human being has to stock up on some calories, why not make it a pleasure and go out to eat with your friends? You are right to assume that is what we do pretty much every day.


The first dish is actually referred to as western food, maybe because of the few salad leaves...



The second dish is Indonesian food, Chicken Pendang if I am not mistaken, also very recommendable.

The third dish to me looks like vegies, rice and meat.





















I hope they invent something to transmit smells and tastes pretty quickly, you are missing something.

some impressions from campus

Dear friends and family,

when waiting at the shuttle bus stops, sometimes you kill some minutes by capturing a view or two of the buildings you normally sit in. The first one shows one of the many libraries on campus.








The second shows the outside view of Canteen A which I already commented on some time ago, you should know it from inside as well :-)
















The last impression is about the little Chinaman, who tried to run with his head through a wall.

"Da kann ich nur sagen: Besser Brett vorm Kopf, als Kopf im Brett"

Sadly enough ever since then, he has to walk around with what is left over of his adventure. NO, it is not a simple hat, it is really a handyman helmet with a piece of drywall around it...it supplies him with some shade on a sunny day, though. Quite a creative solution, if you are bothered by regular hats that fly of once a slight breeze comes up.
Fingers crossed the weather does not change too soon.

Singapore Skyline und Merlion

Liebe Leser,

Singapurs Skyline direkt am Ozean ist wohl ein Photo wert. Die Nacht zuvor waren wir in der roof top bar eines der Wolkenkratzer im Hintergrund im 72. Stock. Ob ich euch von dieser Party Bilder zeige werde ich mir noch überlegen...








Das Wahrzeichen der Stadt verschwindet im oberen Bild leider direkt hinter meinem Kopf, so dass ich nochmal für Euch um das halbe Hafenbecken gejoggt bin, um mich auch noch neben dem Merlion, halb Meerjungfrau halb Löwe, photographieren zu lassen.

Unsere Klassenräume

Liebe Leser,

in angenehmer Atmosphere lernt es sich viel schöner. Da lohnt sich auch schon mal der lange Weg zu unseren Unterrichtsräumen, die zu Fuß etwa 25 min und 0,7 Liter Wasser entfernt sind.
Glücklicherweise bringt uns ein nach völlig unerklärlichem Takt fahrender Bus-Service bis kurz vor den Trakt der Uni, der unsere Business School beheimatet.
Dann können wir uns in klimatisierten Räumen mit angenehmem Möbiliar fragen, warum die Infrastuktur an Deutschen Hochschulen so vergleichsweise ausbaubedürftig ist.

Zwar hat sich im ersten Bild glatt noch ein alter Overhead oder Tageslichtprojektor versteckt, in fast allen anderen Klassenräumen ist dieser allerdings mittlerweile durch einen Tageslicht-Scanner ersetzt worden, der alles und jedes gefilmt auf die Leinwand wirft.

















So, nun wisst ihr auch, wo ich wohl die nächsten Mo, Di, Do und Freitage verbringen werden, denn Mittwochs habe ich frei :-).

some food for our thoughts

Dear friends and family,

In canteen A (see left), the only airconditioned canteen on campus that I have found so far, the variety of food to choose from is excellent. Nine different stands cook fresh food for the equivalent of 2,- EUR or 3 USD, what a happy life.
Yet, after finding out that Chinese sweet and sour chicken actually includes pretty much every part of the poor little chicken and I repeatedly had to chew my way through joints and nuckles, I got much more inclined to the Korean cuisine where they have nice little BBQ samples and good noodles. Plus, everything that is not fried, does not count as fast food :-)



















The two food pictures show typical Singaporean dishes and deserts. Particularly the ice cones with colored sugar flavors are worth a try!

Queridos amigos y familiares,

The building you see on the left is graduate hall, my room is on the very right side, close to the stairs. The stairway is the first row of "open windows" on the right. In the second row from the right, the 4th window from the top is my little room, where you have such a view as on the other picture.
This picture was taken on a fog-free morning, before I went out for a run at 7am. It is too hot afterwards, but it is such a nice way of starting the day. You should try it as well.

THE POOL

Liebe Leser,

kaum 7 Gehminuten, freundlich an den Palmenhang geschmiegt befindet sich die kleine Olypische Oase der Nanyang Technology Universität. Sollte es einmal ein wenig zu warm sein, oder der Ausblick aus dem eigenen Fenster zu langweilig erscheinen, empfiehlt sich ein kleiner Abstecher zum Pool... Ich persönlich gehe bevorzugt am So, gerne aber auch Mo und Di, Mittwochs nach dem Unterricht oder Donnerstags nach dem Laufen am Abend; Freitags sowieso. Am Wochenende ist der Pool erst recht entspannend, denn dann sind viele Einheimische unterwegs, schön für die vielen AustauschstudentInnen!















Ob ich mir gerade ins eigene Fleisch geschnitten habe, kann ich noch nicht absehen, aber in D sind derzeit ja auch Ferien, warum sollten wir nicht die letzten freien Tage vor dem lern- und stressintensiven Semester auf den Sonnenliegen geniessen?

Was meint Ihr? Mein Kollege Andi nickt jedenfalls zustimmend!

Party in St.James

When we go out to party, it all starts with meeting everybody, as the group is too big to move around as one entity. Soon afterwards in the Salsa room the first steps are practiced...
