Dear friends and family,

I wish all of you started the day with a smile. This post continues the history of events in Australia, sharing some impressions about Perth, the last city before my return to Singapore. In the walkable shopping mall in the heart of the city the free guided tour stopped at this little side street that upon entering took us back into London many years ago. A rich businessman attempted to bring back some flair of old British days...

Afternoon escape to Manly

Dear friends and family,

I hope you started into a wonderful day just like me with nice breakfast and a group of friends.

Today I would like to give you another reason why Sydney is amongst my favorite cities in the world. Apart from all the modern day amenities that it offers, its proximity to stunning natural beauties is hard to match. That afternoon I went by ferry to Manly, a nearby island and beach surrounding Sydney harbor. The view from the boat was great and the snorkeling quite okay. I met nice people at the beach that watched my things and engaged in a great conversation with me for a little while... people there are incredibly friendly.

Sitzen wie die Königin

Liebe Leser,

nach längerer Pause melde ich mich frisch und munter wieder zurück in meinem Blog. Die Geschichten der letzten Reise auf die Philippinen werden euch in den kommenden Tagen erreichen. Soweit teile ich chronologisch meine Eindrücke weiterhin aus Australien.
Am gleichen Tag an dem ich so beeindruckt von der Schönheit der Botanischen Gärten war, habe ich mich auch auf dem Aussichtsstuhl der Königing ausgeruht, selbst wenn sich die Strapazen des Tages sehr in Grenzen hielten. Der Blick, den Ihr unten links seht, war sicher damals schon wunderschön. Ich freue mich dies alles mit euch teilen zu können und wünsche einen

Harbour Bridge and the Royal Botanical Gardens

Liebe Leser,

ganz besonder schön fand ich in Sydney die botanischen Gärten. Schon der Weg dorhin, den ihr auf den beiden linken Photos seht, war überzeugend. Selbst die vielen nervigen Mackpie birds konnten mir mein Sandwich nicht aus der Hand reißen, noch mir die super Laune an diesem schönen Sonnentag vermiesen. Der Vormittag am Meeresrand, umgeben von exotischen und einheimischen Gewächsen hat mich auf sehr ruhige Weise glücklich gemacht.

PhD studies near Toronto?

Dear Friends and Family

The University of Western Ontario, Richard Ivey School of Business, has just send me an email with an invitation to accept their offer of admission. I would be part of a research team working on General Managment questions with a clear focus on entrepreneurship.
I am in the celebration mood, because that secures four F's:
Fun,Freedom and Funds for the next Four years.
Once back from my happy trip, I will analyze the offer in detail.

Opera House, May and Mat

Dear friends around the world,

please join me in admiration of one of the finest architectural buildings in Sydney, the world famous Opera House. I regret not having had the chance yet, to see it from the inside, but the German saying: "Where there is willpower, there will be a way" holds true for that one.
Maybe my future studies will take me there on exchange. I would not mind.
Certainly happily I would embrace my dear friend May, who took all the time in the world to show me around Sydney by day and by night. Her fabulous skills as a tour-guide and insider when it comes to restaurants and bars surely added to my great impression of Sydney!

Sydney at night from the rooftops

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

to enjoy the view over Sydney's skyscrapers at night, my jeans and tennis shoes had to make do. Yet, I did not feel entirely comfortable on the highest floor of the five star Shangrila Hotel. The view I enjoyed together with my friend May however, was more than overcompensating my underdressing style issues. The last picture shows the view out of the hostel in which I stayed.
I am surprised how the pictures worked out with the zoom of the little ixus.

Hätte ich mich doch besser informiert, meine lieben Leser. Als ich in Sydney ankam, war praktisch alles ausgebucht, denn an dem Wochenende war Mardigra, die wohl größte homosexuel angehauchte Parade Australiens und sicher einer der top events in der Stadt.
So musste ich den Geruch der Tütensuppe auf dem Sims des Plastikkamins zusammen auf den Metallfedern der Billigmatratze aussitzen. Geschadet hat es mir sicher nicht, denn so konnte ich die anderen schönen Unterkünfte meiner Reise noch ein wenig mehr schätzen.
Das nächste Mal schaue ich also vorab in den Eventskalender und reise nicht schon am Tag vor der Party ab...

Sydney bei Dämmerung im Park

Liebe Leser,

nach dem architektonisch historischen Einstieg in eine der schönsten Großstädte der Welt möchte ich heute die Perspektive aus einem der zahlreichen Parks in der Innenstadt bei Dämmerung mit euch teilen.
Besonders bemerkenswert fand ich die zwei kleinen roten Punkte im letzen Bild. Deren Besitzer kam während meiner Lesepause ganz neugierig auf mich zu.

Freier Fall im Questacon

Liebe Leser,

schon immer einen leichten Hang zu sportlicher Betätigung habe ich im Questacon, dem Science Center Canberra's, ein neues Hobby entdeckt: Den Freefall.
Ähnlich einer Rutsche auf einem gewöhnlichen Kinderspielplatz ist nur der untere Teil der durch die Blaumänner polierten Metalbahn. Oben, auf ca. 7,50m Höhe hängt man mehrere Sekunden, so lange einen die eigenen Stahlmuskeln denn halten, und geniesst es die Füsse baumeln zu lassen. Dann, den Bruchteil einer Sekunde nach dem Loslassen, spürt man dieses seltsame Gefühl in der Magengegend. Ich möchte versuchen es zu beschreiben, so gut es eben geht. Es ist irgendetwas zwischen warmen Pflaumenkuchen mit Sahne und Zimt (und da ihr mich kennt, wisst ihr, wie sehr ich den mag) und der Plastiktüte, die im Flugzeug immer griffbereit vor einem in der Einstecktasche wartet. Jedenfalls ist es sehr einzigartig und erinnerte mich an die Schwerelosigkeitssekunden bei Sinkflug.

So viel für heute, denn eigentlich probe ich ja den Aufstieg,

Canberra at dusk

Dear friends and family, dear Luzzi Family,

the ink in your guestbook may have dried only some moments ago. My memories of a wonderful week with you in Canberra are still vivid and fresh. Amazed by the Kakadu on the porch and the first real sunset to experience above Australian roofs made for a wonderful welcome on my arrival day!

Aussi Footy Match

Dear friends near and far,

I hope my blog still entertains and informs you reasonably well. My apologies for the recent delay. Australia is such a beautiful place that I preferably spend my time elsewhere as opposed to spending it in front of the computer. Yet, here I am, giving my memories some written shape to share them with you.
One of the many memorizable events of my Melbourne adventures with Scotty was the AFL (Australia Football League) match he took me to.

Australian football is played with two teams of 18 players with a ball in the shape of a prolate spheroid, what an average European would call a simple American Football without the lining. It is played outdoors on a large oval shaped grass fields. The two posts and two behind posts at each end make up the. The primary aim of the game is to score 6 point goals by kicking the ball between the middle two posts of the opposing goal. Quite logically, the winner is the team who has the higher total score at the end of the fourth quarter, i.e. roughly after 100 min. I enjoyed almost every minute of it, because it was fast, happening and very entertaining to watch. Yet, I did not quite want to trade spots with the bulky players who tackle each other feriously without any body protection but muscles.

As Scotty explained, an Aussie Footy experience was not complete until I ate my meatpie with Ketchup and gulped down my little blondie, I turned into a beer-drinker for the first quarter and most of the second quarter of the game.

Queen Victoria's Market

Liebe Freunde und Familie,

ich hoffe euch geht es sehr gut. Ich habe mir überlegt, wenn man einen Markt nach sich benannt hat, was bedeuted das wohl? Ist dies ein Zeichen der Nähe zu den Menschen? Ein Erinnerungsplan an besonders herausragende Handelsfähigkeiten? Ich weiss es immer noch nicht.
Dennoch konnnte ich den Vormittag, den ich auf dem größten Markt (wahrscheinlich "nur") Australiens verbracht habe, dank der Farbenpracht und Vielfalt des Angebotes sehr geniessen. Leider verraten die wenigen Bilder nicht all zu viel, aber einen Eindruck von der großzügig gestalten Halle gibt es doch. Dies ist eine Hälfte von einer der 12 Hallen, wenn ich mich nicht irre.

Das Quokka

Hallo ihr Lieben nah und fern,

ich hab euch alle schrecklich gern.
Ich hab euch eingeladen zu verweilen,
darum geb' ich mir Mühe mit euch zu teilen.
Mein neues Lieblingstier,
das zeige ich euch heute hier:




















Das kleine Quokka ist ein Mini-Kanguru,
kommt voller Futtererwartung auf einen zu,
schaut dich mit großen Kulleraugen an,
da denkt man schnell, gleich bist DU dran.

Doch dank liebevoller Kleintierhaltung
gabs keinen Streit mit der Verwaltung,
sondern lediglich das nette Bildchen hier,
von meinem neunen Lieblingstier.

feeding the Kangaroos

Dear friends and family,

on the morning of Feb 27th, I fed my first real kangaroo! It was not as bouncy as my buddy Scottie, but walked rather with the help of its tale-crutch. Still, it gently eat out of my hand. When holding my hand to high, the claws on its fingers ensured I lowered it to comfortable feeding highs again. Sadly the Koalas only move for an average of 4 min per day and we were not there during those 4 minutes, so the Koala experience was quite lame. Still they are wonderful animals. Yet, not as wonderful as my new favorite animal that I kindly present to you tomorrow.

Great Ocean Road

Liebe Leser,

die Great Ocean Road im Südwesten Melbournes ist eine der top Attraktionen der Region. Eng entlang der Küste schlängelt sich diese Meerblickstrasse zwischen dem Ozean und Nationalparks in wunderschön weichen Kurven daher. Alle paar hundert Meter wird den Touris mit einer schönen Aussichtsplattform genüge getan und den einheimischen ein Weg zum Strand ausgeschildert. Der "Surf" der Region zieht ganzjährig viele Wassersportbegeisterte an und ist auch für die weniger Sportlichen nett anzusehen. Besonders das Farbspiel aus Blauem Meer, gelben Steinformationen, weissem Surf und Grünem Gewächs hat mir gefallen. Vielleicht lade ich deshalb so viele Photos hoch :-)
Natürlich habe ich es mir nicht nehmen lassen, auch einen kleinen Tauchgang in Bass Strait zu unternehmen. Ich hoffe ihr geniesst die Natur ebenso!
