Male abuse in Singapore

Liebe Leser,

so schnell ziehen die Schattenseiten der Emanzipation am Horizont auf. Kaum hat man einmal das Kochen/Kaufen des gemeinsamen Abendessens übernommen, schon fordert die vereinte Menge weiblicher Teilnehmer auch noch den Abwasch von den Männern erledigt zu sehen...
Phil (ganz links) schlägt sich glänzend, im warsten Sinne des Wortes, Ayush(zweiter von links) hatte vorher noch nie ein Abtrockentuch in seinen Händen.... must be nice to life in Nepal...
In jedem Fall ging es den Mädels aber nicht schnell genug, weswegen sie skeptisch die Aufsicht übernahmen... zu viert!

Gut, dass ich "dringend" Fotos machen musste, um dem Rest der Welt diesen Vorfall zu dokumentieren.

"pot luck" at Phil's place

Dear Reader,

I hope you are doing as well as me after my afternoon run around campus.

Today I would like to share the simple pleasures of life with you: When we received the warm invite of Latana and Philip some days ago, we were already very happy, but the evening itself left little to be desired. As you can see our menu on the first picture, the "pot luck" the two hosts organized really was outstanding. Everybody contributed with food or drinks, appetizers, salad, fruits, meat, Sushi, cake, etc. to make our evening a 13 course menu. Philip made great rice!
As we were surrounded by very nice people, there could have hardly been any other evening activity as enjoyable...

Fireworks on the 20th floor

Liebe Leser,

zwar ist Singapur's Nationaltag bereits am 09.August gefeiert worden, dass hält aber die freudigen Insulaner nicht davon ab, nochmal ein paar Raketen steigen zu lassen...
Vom 20. Stockwerk eines nahegelegenen Wohnhauses, wo wir auch unser Abendessen gemeinsam genießen konnten, hatten wir einen tollen Ausblick auf die Stadt und das Feuerwerk. Diejenigen von uns die in den kritischen 15 Minuten in der Metro steckten, sein diese Photos besonders empfohlen.

Chinatown

Dear Reader,
lately we had the opportunity to get to know a different side of Singapore. While we were walking through the rain, people were praying in their temples on the side of the road. Whoever was not used to the stinky smell of Durians, had to in order to survive, because it was haunting you down around every corner. Luckily we found a great place that sold BBQ pork soaked in honey and smoked in the pit for a while.... very yummy. I wish you could try!

Matti goes underwater

Dear Readers,

I hope all of you had such a great day as I did. Just a few moments ago I signed up for an adventurous trip to the part of the world that is the least discovered. If Asia is loud, crowded, and hectic, I am going to escape.... After 2003 (Egypt) and 2005 (Thailand) it is time yet again to go to the underwater world. Within 25 days from now I will be a licensed PADI open water diver!

Liebe Leser,

heute haben mich gleich zwei Postsendungen sehr glücklich gemacht. Ich möchte mich herzlich für die kulinarischen Freuden und unbezahlbaren Kunstwerke bedanken die mein Leben in Singapur auf angenehmste Weise versüßen und mit der Heimat verbinden. Es tut gut zu wissen, zu sehen und zu schmecken, dass Ihr mich begleitet, wohin ich auch gehe. Es ist toll solche Freunde wie Euch zu haben!

local delights

Dear Reader,

sorry for the delay in writing. I guess group work, case writing and translations are taking their toll. Still time is very enjoyable over here, despite the fact that the rainy season is knocking heavily at my window.

Before having had dinner at Philip's place the other night, I was prompted to try out some local fruits... since I forgot the names already, I had some help from a local (thanks Wei-Chieh)




"The first one is called a mangosteen. It's nicknamed the Queen of Fruits. Durian <<(not tried yet, not on the pictures either)>>, on the other hand, is nicknamed the King of Fruits (as obnoxious as it goes). The two fruits are usually in season together, so people who eat the heaty durians would very often also eat mangosteens to counter the "heatiness" because the mangosteen has a cooling effect - ok, these are the terms used in chinese medicine, which groups food into various types. Eat too much, and there'll be an imbalance, and you fall sick."

The second one is the Ramputan fruit, a little bit like Lychees. Sweet, quite refreshing, somewhat cooling...


As all of you know, I am a very careful guy.... so I did not fall sick... yet.
